Lost or Stolen Refund

Check the status of your refund using “Where’s My Refund” If the IRS issued your refund, but you haven’t received it, your refund may have been lost, stolen, or misplaced. If this is the case, you can ask the IRS to do a refund trace. This is the process the IRS uses to track a lost, stolen, or misplaced refund check or to verify a financial institution received a direct deposit.

Refund Offset

Your tax return may show you’re due a refund from the IRS. However, if you owe a federal tax debt from a prior tax year, or a debt to another federal agency, or certain debts under state law, the IRS may keep (offset) some or all your tax refund to pay your debt. If you need more information on the offset, contact the Bureau of the Fiscal Service at 800-304-3107 to find out where Treasury applied your tax refund.
